About:
Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arrangement, also known as 'kado' or "the way of flowers." The tradition dates back to the 7th century when floral offerings were made at altars.
The growing appreciation of Japanese art and architecture in the West has extended to the Japanese way with flowers. Ikebana is an art, in the same sense that painting and sculpture are arts. It is more than simply putting flowers in a container. Its materials are living branches, leaves, grasses, and blossoms.
Emily Viland has been a gardener all her life. She is both a flower arranger and judge for flower shows. She is also a member of Ikebana International and Ohara school of Ikebana.
